Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer (CAO), the Senior Director, Corporate Controller will oversee Akebia’s financial reporting and accounting processes. The person in this role will lead the team in implementation and identification of process improvements and optimization of our business processes across the Company to ensure scalability and efficiency. Serving as a key member of the Finance Leadership Team, the Corporate Controller is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting while ensuring compliance with internal and external reporting requirements. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced individual looking to work in a fast-paced, dynamic biotech environment. The Controller is expected to use their experience to train and develop the team.

 

This position requires an in-depth knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and public company financial reporting and internal controls requirements. The person in this position will lead the coordination with external and internal auditors and partner with business stakeholders, including FP&A and Tax.

 

  • Manage an accounting staff  whose activities include the Monthly Close Processes and Procedures, General Accounting, Revenue, Cost Accounting and Payroll and Equity
  • Coach and develop all team members
  • Work closely with and support the SEC Reporting and Technical Accounting function
  • Work closely with and support Internal Controls function
  • Recommend and implement process improvements that will enhance efficiency, internal controls and enable timely business decisions
  • Partner with business stakeholders to recommend system improvements or integrations to enable improved financial reporting or analyses
  • Ensure processes and people are in place to deliver timely and accurate monthly financial statements
  • Support strong internal controls across the organization
  • Direct and lead accounting teams in the development, implementation and oversight of company-wide accounting policies and controls consistent with SEC, US GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance
  • Work closely with the CAO and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on presenting materials to the Audit Committee
  • Manage relationship and reporting matters with the external audit firm and interface effectively with external and internal audit resources to resolve complex accounting and auditing issues.
  • Optimize the team organizational structure
  • Participate in and collaborate with Company programs, projects and objectives which require extensive communication, change management and interactions with other finance leaders (e.g., FP&A, Investor Relations, Supply Chain, etc.) including the CFO, as well as other functional leaders
  • Work closely with and support the Tax and Treasury roles
  • Be a key team member in identifying and managing areas of enterprise risk

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Current CPA license
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
  • 15+ years of work experience in corporate accounting in roles of increasing responsibility
  • 5+ years experience in an accounting leadership role in a public company, including SEC reporting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Device, Diagnostic, Biotech or Pharmaceutical industry experience
  • Ability to train, mentor and motivate team members
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with general accounting, month end close procedures, eliminations and consolidations, SOX controls and external audit procedures
  • Experience leading and driving process improvements
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build cross-functional relationships to drive business results
  • Gross to net revenue experience
  • Inventory experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work and communicate effectively at all levels within and external to the organization
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to prioritize and to establish and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with NetSuite ERP platform
  • Highly experienced in Excel
 

Compensation:

Targeted Base: 219,714.92 - 271,412.55*

*Base Compensation for this role will depend on a number of factors including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience, and may fall outside of the range shown. Base pay is only one component of the company’s total rewards package, all regular employees are also eligible for the corporate bonus program or the incentive compensation program (if applicable), as well as equity. Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, etc.
