Akebia Therapeutics, Inc., is looking for an experienced hands-on Senior Accounting Manager who is an enthusiastic, strong leader with a solid technical accounting background. The Senior Accounting Manager will report to the Controller and will play a critical role in driving the monthly and quarterly close process to ensure a high quality, accurate and efficient monthly and quarterly close that enables the Company to meet its external SEC reporting/filing timelines, all while ensuring the Company’s SOX internal controls are operating effectively, and the Company’s books and records are in compliance with US GAAP. The person in this role will also help generate and lead process improvements and optimization of our business processes across the Company, to ensure scalability of the Company’s operations to support future growth. A key goal for the Senior Accounting Manager will be to drive continuous improvements in our accounting close and reporting processes and the related SOX internal controls.

The Senior Accounting Manager will:

  • Manage the accounting function, consisting of the monthly/quarterly closing process, including preparation and/or review of all required journal entries, monthly balance sheet reconciliations, cash receipts/disbursements and stock-based compensation
  •  Have a solid understanding of cutoffs and accruals with the ability to work closely with other departments to ensure completeness and accuracy of all accrued expenses
    • Experience with clinical trial and other operations accruals a plus
  • Ensure that the close process is streamlined and all deadlines are met, and the roles and responsibilities of those involved are appropriate. Recommend and implement any changes necessary to improve the close process
  •  Have a basic understanding of cost accounting
    • Inventory costing, reserve analysis, cost of goods sold, overhead calculation, cost adjustments
    • Preparation of all inventory-related journal entries at month-end
  •  Lead/assist with the planning and execution of the annual physical inventory counts including analysis and reporting of results
  • Maintain and ensure ongoing compliance with accounting policies and procedures
  • Prepare quarterly collaboration revenue calculations and related collaboration partner invoices
  • Review of monthly/quarterly stock-based compensation expense files
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
  • Assist other team members with research of accounting issues for compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Lead the coordination and support of the independent auditors in their quarterly reviews and annual audits, including preparation of prepared by client schedules (PBCs)
  •  Support the company’s SOX 404 compliance including:
    • Internal control documentation (maintenance of updated narratives, control matrices/flowcharts)
    • Walkthroughs and testing process in conjunction with a third-party consulting firm
    • SOX 404 audits, including preparation of PBC’s
  •  Assist with banking related tasks, including timely and accurate monthly and quarterly banking compliance activities
  • Respond to inquiries from finance and company-wide managers regarding financial results, special reporting requests and the like.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or MBA in Accounting
  • 6+ years of Accounting experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA preferred
  • Biopharmaceutical industry experience 
  • Experience leading an accounting organization for a public company
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP and SOX
  • Strong work ethic with good judgment, initiative and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to research and interpret accounting guidance
  • Excellent organization and problem-solving skills and the ability to independently prioritize multiple tasks and bring projects to completion
  • The ability to sustain productivity in a fast-paced environment, maintain composure and focus under pressure and deadline
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  •  Ability to interact with and build relationships across all levels of the organization
