The Theater Technician is responsible for assisting the Theater Arts Technical Director in the planning, supervision, and implementation of all of the technical production elements for the APU Theater Department. Working primarily in the construction of scenic properties, this individual will aid in the supervision of student workers on assigned projects under the direct supervision of the Technical Director and Production Manager. This is a part-time, 10-month position averaging 20 hours per week. Hours are flexible based on the needs of production and the department.
Required Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Theater Arts, Technical Theater, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Required Experience
- Minimum of one year of hands-on experience in technical theater, with a focus on theatrical construction, stagecraft, or related production disciplines.
Primary Duties/Essential Functions
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of the scene shop, lighting lab, and theater performance spaces under the guidance of the Technical Director and Technical Theater faculty.
- Collaborate with technical and design faculty to create and implement weekly production build schedules and task lists.
- Provide mentorship, guidance, and training to student crews in all aspects of technical production.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of tools, equipment, materials, and stock scenery.
- Ensure compliance with facility policies, safety protocols, and industry best practices at all times.
- Support sound, lighting, and set operations as needed during rehearsals and performances.
- Assist in maintaining theater facilities, ensuring all work meets CAL/OSHA safety standards.

- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
- Regular, punctual attendance as required by the supervisor based on department needs.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

- In agreement with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.
- Ability to design lights or sound for a production is a plus, but not necessary.
Physical Demands
- Physical work and endurance, including frequent lifting (occasional lifting up to 50-75 pounds)
- Ability to reach, bend, twist, grasp, and reach.
- Ability to construct sets and climb ladders.
- Ability to work at heights and in challenging environments.
- Ability to construct sets and use power tools. (Chop saw, Circular saw, Table saw, Jig saw, Impact driver, drills, routers, pneumatic nail and staple guns, air compressor, etc.)
- Ability to work at heights of 20+ feet and in challenging environments.
Visual Demands
- Reading blueprints.
Environment
- Loud, continuous, high noise volume, exposed to hot and cold temperatures during busy times.
Technologies
- Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
- General understanding of operating an ION XE 20 Lighting board with ETC software.
- General understanding of operating a Yamaha CL5 digital mixing console.
Compensation
- Grade 8: $21.44 to $24.66 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
