Sending out Christian workers to participate in God’s redemptive ministry is at the heart of the mission of Azusa Pacific University. The Center for Vocational Ministry (CVM) at APU is continuing to develop programs for equipping faculty, staff, and ministry leaders for ministering in the world. We are looking for a gifted preacher and shepherd to equip our university community and ministry partners.
We are seeking an accomplished preacher and pastor to serve as our Preacher in Residence, with the ability to inspire, mobilize, and encourage our Azusa Pacific community as well as external ministry partners. The preacher must have the ability to connect with Christians of different ages from a variety of Christian backgrounds. We seek a leader with a proven history of ministering to and mobilizing the church, as well as a demonstrated commitment to the spiritual formation of ministry leaders.
This position presents an exciting opportunity to equip the next generation of church leaders as well as assist in the development of resources that will have a regional and national impact. The role aligns with the goal of the Center for Vocational Ministry: to be a leader in equipping churches and Christian non-profits through formational resources, research, and relationships.
This one-year position is funded by the Compelling Preaching Initiative at APU’s Center for Vocational Ministry. The Preacher-In-Residence will be a representative of Azusa Pacific University in various public and university preaching and teaching settings. Opportunities will be given to preach and teach at large events of Azusa Pacific University - key gatherings for equipping and encouraging faculty, staff, and students toward spiritual transformation. The successful candidate will serve as an external Ambassador of Azusa Pacific University and the Center for Vocational Ministry.
- Master of Divinity degree or equivalent. A relevant doctoral degree is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Wesleyan theological heritage of APU.
- Licensed or ordained minister with denominational support and accountability.
- Extensive professional church and/or parachurch ministry leadership experience.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Teaching experience in Christian Higher Education.
- Proven record of expertise in preaching, pastoral ministry, and congregational leadership.
- Passion for mentoring and developing the next generation of church leaders.
Preaching, Teaching, and Mentoring

- Deliver guest lectures in undergraduate and seminary courses.
- Preach at various on-campus events, such as conferences, chapel services, faculty and staff training, student gatherings, and Center for Vocational Ministry events.
- Develop and deliver courses in the new Certificate of Compelling Preaching program.
- Help lead Compelling Preaching Cohorts for aspiring and current preachers.
- Contribute to learning experiences in the Preaching Lab for undergraduate students.
- Mentor and/or coach ministry leaders in the Compelling Preaching Initiative.
- Research and Exploration.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to explore contemporary preaching topics, including innovative methods, contextualization, audience engagement, preacher’s spiritual development, and the use of technology in preaching.
- Conference Planning and Participation.
- Provide thought leadership for the launch of a new preaching conference.
- Preach at the conference.
Preaching Resources Creation

- Contribute to podcasts, webinars, and online content for the Compelling Preaching Initiative and Center for Vocational Ministry.
- At the conclusion of residency, produce a culminating resource (i.e., video, podcast, curriculum, etc.) that synthesizes insights and learning from the residency. This publishable resource will be shared with the university and wider church community.
- Ambassadorial Work.
- During tenure of residency, will function as an ambassador of Azusa Pacific University in external speaking engagements.

Compensation
- Grade 16: $70,713 to $81,320 is the annual salary for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
