Discipleship and Campus Ministries Coordinator - Spiritual Life

The Discipleship Coordinator oversees and implements relational discipleship opportunities for APU students including coordinating program logistics, such as recruiting, training, event planning, placement, follow-up, and advising. This position also oversees, designs, and implements spiritual programing initiatives on campus This position is critical to the overall spiritual formation of students through providing pastoral care, preaching in chapels, supporting on-campus spiritual formation activities, and supporting local and global service engagement.

 

 

Required Education

  • B.A. completed (in a theological discipline).
  • M.A. or M.Div. preferred (in a theological discipline, such as Divinity, Theology, Christian ministry, etc.).

 

 

Required Experience

  • Three to four years of ministry experience and/or student affairs.

 

 

Primary Duties/Essential Functions

Relational Discipleship Ministry

  • The Discipleship Coordinator provides leadership of discipleship initiatives, programs, and processes.
  • Oversees the process of recruiting, selecting, and training student leaders within the Spiritual Life department.
  • Researches, implements, and creates discipleship resources for APU students.
  • Designs and implements promotion strategy for student involvement.
  • Creates and maintains creative campus partnerships with various offices and departments to increase the quality and quantity of discipleship activities.
  • Provide occasional opportunities for informal mentoring partnerships targeted at APU students.
  • May be required to drive a university vehicle at least 2-3x an academic year on university business, therefore must have a valid driver's license. 

General Spiritual Programing

  • Develops occasional creative opportunities for campus-wide spiritual formation engagement and enlist support from Spiritual Life staff to participate.
  • Provides confidential pastoral counseling as one of APU’s Campus Pastors.
  • Preaches occasionally in chapels as assigned by supervisor, Director of Chapel, and Dean of Spiritual Life.
  • Collaborates in planning and implementing campus-wide spiritual formation initiatives.
  • Collaborates on and participates in Discipleship and Mobilization-wide activities, including but not limited to local and global retreats and trainings, global re-entry experiences, educational experiences and trips, etc.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Director of Discipleship and Mobilization.

  • Knowledge of procedures and theory in the field of spiritual mentoring, small group ministry, pastoral counseling, Biblical interpretation, and Christian theology.
  • Ability to encourage a range of spiritual and intellectual styles and develop leaders to minister to APU students.

  • Ability to work under pressure, exuding a mature demeanor while multi-tasking in a deadline oriented environment with accuracy and consistency.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team, as well as an independent contributor.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretionary skills in determining when to act independently and when to consult management prior to taking action.
  • Self-starter with a positive attitude.
  • In agreement with the purpose and goals of Azusa Pacific University in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students.

 

 

Physical Demands 

  • Requires repetitive motions and sitting at computer keyboard.
  • Hearing and speaking on the telephone.
  • Able to conduct business at other offices on campus.
  • Able to lift, bend, grasp, reach, lift up to 20 lbs. occasionally.

 

 

Visual Demands

  • Reading, writing notes, and computer monitor.

 

 

Environment

  • Pleasant office, comfortable temperatures. 

 

 

Technologies

  • Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.

 

 

Compensation

  • Grade 8: $21.44 to $24.66 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
