The Department of Music invites applications for an Adjunct of Jazz Ensemble to join the APU Music faculty in continuing its decades long tradition of developing musicians of character and competence within a 'top 10 music school in California'.  This position is designed for an active artist-educator who is passionate about teaching, mentoring, recruiting, and building a top-tier collegiate jazz ensemble within a comprehensive School of Music.
 
Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of adjunct faculty is to deliver instruction in the manner determined by the department. In addition, faculty responsibilities may include:
  • Artistic Leadership & Programming: Select and curate compelling, stylistically diverse repertoire that reflects excellence in jazz and commercial music traditions. Rehearse with precision and purpose, and design performances that serve as both high-impact educational experiences and engaging, outward-facing artistic events that attract and grow audiences.
  • Ensemble Development & Excellence: Build and sustain a regionally and nationally competitive jazz/commercial ensemble marked by artistic distinction, stylistic authenticity, and professional-level performance standards. Prepare ensembles for high-profile performances including recordings, tours, festivals, etc.
  • Student Development & Mentorship: Mentor students in pedagogical mastery, improvisation, stylistic fluency, and artistic identity. Equip students with the skills necessary for success in diverse career pathways, including performance, studio work, commercial music, and music education.
  • Recruitment & Program Visibility: Actively recruit high-level students through strategic outreach, auditions, festivals, and personal engagement. Cultivate a strong ensemble identity that enhances program visibility and contributes to enrollment growth.
  • Collaborative Faculty Engagemen: Partner closely with applied faculty and area coordinators to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive jazz/commercial music experience across lessons, ensembles, and coursework.
  • Cross-Ensemble Collaboration: Support and encourage student participation across the broader instrumental program, including Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band(s), and chamber ensembles, fostering holistic musicianship.
  • Industry Integration & Professional Preparation: Leverage professional networks within the Los Angeles jazz, commercial, recording, film, and church music industries to create meaningful opportunities for students, including internships, session work, and professional collaborations.
  • Community Engagement & Outreach: Build and maintain strong relationships with regional high schools, community colleges, and universities to support recruitment and program partnerships. Represent the university through clinics, guest conducting, adjudication, and community performances.
  • Professional Activity & Visibility: Maintain active engagement as a performer, scholar, or industry professional. Participate in regional and national organizations and contribute to the broader artistic and educational community.
  • Innovation & Program Growth : Develop innovative programming, including cross-genre collaborations, commercial music integration (e.g., pop, gospel, film scoring), recording projects, and entrepreneurial initiatives that position the ensemble at the forefront of contemporary music education.
  • Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.
Qualifications
  • Must have a master’s or terminal degree in the field of instruction or related area.
  • Preferred experience includes teaching at the college or university level.
  • The ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • A demonstrated, vibrant Christian faith compatible with the mission of Azusa Pacific University.
Workload
  • Assigned teaching duties will not exceed 9 units per semester; office hours and additional duties may be assigned. Total workload will not exceed 29 hours per week, nor 24 units per 12-month period.
Mental Demands
  • Ability to integrate Christian values in all aspects.
  • Ability to engage in critical thinking and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information.
  • Self-starter, ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.

Compensation

  • $25.32 - $27.32/hour (Using a 3 unit full semester appointment as a pay guide). The actual hourly rate will be determined by the units, course length, experience, and rank of the candidate. Adjuncts are paid on an hourly basis which includes preparation and teaching time.
