The School of Nursing invites applications for adjunct faculty to teach public health which is provided both in person and online. 

Specialization: Public Health.

Familiarity teaching courses covering some or all the following public health topics:

  • Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Disaster Health and Emergency Preparedness
  • Environmental Health
  • Health Policy and Administration
  • Health Promotion and Education
  • International Health
  • Social and Behavioral Science

Responsibilities

  • Enrich courses by sharing theoretical and practical knowledge of the subject, and encouraging direct application to the workplace within the field of public health.
  • Maintain expertise and technical competence in the public health field.
  • Provide a classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Select, develop and use informal and formal techniques or instruments to measure student learning, modifying teaching strategies if needed.
  • Timely grading of assignments and providing quality feedback.
  • Respond to student e-mails, questions, and comments within one business day.
  • Grade and provide quality feedback to student on their assignments within two business days, including progress reports and assessments of student activities.
  • Submit and maintain accurate records of attendance and grades.
  • Communicate with SON/DPH faculty & staff weekly concerning any problems or potential problems with students.
  • Supporting local campus events such as orientation and graduation, and participating in various other workshops and meetings.
  • Follow additional job expectations as outlined in APU’s Adjunct Faculty Handbook.
  • Responsible for daily electronic timekeeping as it applies to the scope of this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong command of the English language with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, with an ability to plan and manage multiple projects concurrently in a timely manner.
  • Ability to be proactive, to take ownership of assigned programs, work with little supervision, and meet deadlines.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and appropriate software applications.
  • A positive, cooperative, Christ-like attitude supportive of the University and its mission.
  • May be needed to work at alternative Regional Campuses or Sites (Orange County and/or Online).

Qualifications 

  • Doctoral degree in Public Health, Community Health, Health Care Administration, Health Psychology, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or a related field.
  • Exemplary professional experience.
  • Engagement in research and scholarship (preferred).
  • Online teaching a plus.

Experience

  • For graduate programs, a terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution in the discipline to be taught, with a concentration in the teaching discipline preferred
  • Experience in instruction or formalized education process, preferably in a post-secondary or college institution
  • Membership in a professional association tied to area of instruction preferred

Workload

  • Assigned teaching duties will not exceed 9 units per semester; office hours and additional duties may be assigned. Total workload will not exceed 29 hours per week, nor 24 units per 12-month period.

  • Ability to integrate Christian values in all aspects.
  • Ability to engage in critical thinking and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information.
  • Self-starter, ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.

Compensation

$25.32 - $27.32/hour (Using a 3 unit full semester appointment as a pay guide). The actual hourly rate will be determined by the units, course length, experience, and rank of the candidate. Adjuncts are paid on an hourly basis which includes preparation and teaching time.
