The CFO provides leadership, vision, and oversight for the university’s financial operations encompassing sound, ethical, and transparent fiscal planning, financial management, and budgetary processes that ensure the long-term financial viability of the institution.  The CFO establishes and fosters an environment in which the university is able to meet current operational needs to create, sustain, and grow a vibrant learning community.

The CFO oversees the operations of the following university support functions: Financial Accounting Services (accounting, accounts payable, purchasing, etc.), Facilities department, auxiliary services (bookstore, campus dining, grounds, housekeeping, etc.), and risk management. 

The CFO provides direct supervision to the Controller, Director of Facilities, and Mail Center Manager.  The CFO reports to the President, is a key member of the university leadership team, and serves on the President’s Cabinet.

Essential Functions: 

Fiscal Affairs Leadership

  • Develop and administer the University budget, financial strategic planning, and administrative program assessment to maximize the most efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and standards in service areas ensuring adequate internal controls and compliance with state and federal statutes.
  • Provide direction and oversight for Financial Accounting Services: accounting office, accounts payable, compliance, budget office, financial statements, audit and investments.
  • Establish strong external relationships and negotiate with creditors, service providers, and other financial entities.
  • Oversee development and production of consistently accurate and relevant university metrics, benchmarked to peer institutions, to guide leadership decision making and evidence based decision making.
  • Provide financial oversight for capital/construction projects, including those that involve a variety of debt strategies such as tax-exempt bonds, tax credits, etc.

University Senior Leadership

  • Provide executive-level leadership, strategic planning, oversight, and coordination of all functions and departments reporting to the CFO including Financial Accounting Services, Auxiliary Services, Facilities, and Risk Management in the areas of programming, policy development, human resources, facilities, and fiscal resource management.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of institutional direction and strategic objectives; including the development of operating policies and procedures for organizational business operations to ensure objectives are achieved.
  • Serve as a key contributor to the leadership team and approach all projects with openness and transparency; provide counsel and support to the President as part of the president’s cabinet.
  • Collaborate with leadership team in envisioning and developing strategies and systems to improve the quality, efficiency and responsiveness of a broad range of services and operations.
  • Work closely with trustees in building both administrative and governance oversight of university finances.
  • Represent the university with the highest level of professionalism and integrity embracing the university’s core values in all interactions with leadership, trustees, members of the faculty and staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends.

Support Department/Function Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight to support departments/functions including the Facilities Department, and Auxiliary Services (contracts covering various campus services including dining, bookstore, grounds, housekeeping, etc.).

Assume additional duties as directed by the trustees and/or the President.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Constantly operates a computer and other office machinery.
  • Constantly visually identifies, observes, and assesses.
  • Frequently communicates with university constituents.
  • Frequently remains in a stationary position (standing and/or sitting). Occasionally moves to accomplish tasks and/or to get from one worksite to another.
  • Occasionally moves common office materials.

Work Conditions:

  • Work is primarily indoors, but at times may be required to be in an outdoor environment when traveling between campus buildings or off campus.
  • Will be exposed to frequent noise caused by telephones and office machines.
  • Standard office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday; additional hours required.
  • Off-campus, state and regional travel required.

Required Experience

A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related field is required. Current CPA and/or advanced degree in accounting, finance, business or a related field is preferred. A discernable record of successful and innovative experience in leadership, administration, and finance of at least seven years is required. 

Experience in higher education or non-profits preferred.

A suitable combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum qualifications.
