Ballard Spahr has a great opportunity currently available for a dynamic and successful business development professional to join the Marketing team as a Business Development Manager supporting the Finance Department. The successful candidate will be an important part of our Marketing team and will be required to work closely with Finance Department leadership, practice group leaders, Marketing department leadership, attorneys, and other marketing team members to support the Finance practices in developing new business and deepening existing client relationships. The successful candidate will work with the leadership of the department, and lawyers nationwide, on a wide range of marketing and business development projects and initiatives and will also work collaboratively with marketing colleagues on relevant firmwide and industry-focused projects. This position can be located in Philadelphia or Washington DC.

Responsibilities include:

  • leading efforts to identify relationships and build awareness of firm capabilities with relevant practice and industry organizations
  • promoting the firm’s services
  • developing individual attorney business development plans and leading cross-marketing initiatives
  • providing business development coaching and direction
  • coordinating, tracking and monitoring business development efforts
  • participating in pitches and client meetings

Other essential functions include assisting with the development and management with the practice and office marketing budgets; providing ongoing marketing research, competitive intelligence and analysis, managing the compilation, development and maintenance of relevant database contact/mailing lists and working with the Director of Communications and the PR team to identify press opportunities.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate will demonstrate independent judgment, strategic and diplomatic thinking and have the ability to lead business development efforts while building consensus. The ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines, combined with a strong work ethic and a team player attitude are indispensable.

Required Experience

Requirements include a college degree with 5+ years’ experience in professional services marketing; excellent writing, editing, communication (oral and written), project management, interpersonal, and analytical skills; strong computer proficiency a must, with particular knowledge of Interaction a plus and significant business knowledge and experience; and an intense client service attitude. Experience in financial services and capital markets strongly preferred. Some travel will be required.
