Reporting to the President and Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer will be responsible for all financial activities and relationships of the Company. This individual will be a key advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and play a major leadership role in our company’s strategy and commercial expansion. This executive will ensure that the Company maintains the strong financial infrastructure required to support continued growth. The Chief Financial Officer will be widely viewed as a key member of the management team with responsibility for influencing the thinking and decisions behind the Company’s overall strategies, plans and operations.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Finance - the evaluation, analysis and execution of all capital raising, treasury and all other finance related projects.
  • Corporate Development - from a finance perspective, interface with Corporate Development in the analysis, execution and integration of mergers, acquisitions, business partnerships and licensing agreement
  •  Investor Relations - working closely with the Company’s Chief Executive Officer and the Senior Director, Investor Relations, and Corporate Communications, take a leadership role interfacing with the investment community, specifically working with institutional investors, research analysts, investment bankers and corporate partners.
  • Accounting - responsible for the implementation and management of the accounting structure, methods, systems, operating procedures and FASB and SEC requirements.
  • Planning and Forecasting - responsible for the implementation and management of corporate-wide financial planning, procedures, measures, budgeting and forecasting, project specific financial analysis and general risk analysis.
  • Strategic Planning - as the Company grows, important decisions around clinical development initiatives, product portfolio analysis and commercial expansion will need to be addressed; the Chief Financial Officer will be a significant contributor to these discussions and, in select cases, lead this analysis.
  • Reporting and Analysis - responsible for the timely and accurate reporting and analysis, both written and oral, of financial and associated business information to internal, external, and regulatory constituencies.
  •  Information Systems - through management of the office of Information Technology, responsible for company wide information systems.

 Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must be a proven leader who is a talented, high performing, strategically oriented business leader.
  • This individual will likely be an established, sitting Chief Financial Officer of a sizable public company with broad experience in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and/or medical products industries.
  • He/she will have experience managing all aspects of financial operations, including controllership, financial planning and analysis, tax, treasury, finance, SEC reporting, etc.
  • Collaboration is an important leadership attribute at Akebia. The successful candidate will partner with the rest of the senior management team.  They must demonstrate the ability to effectively connect with their peers and teams to be involved in a variety of company challenges that go beyond the financial function.
  • Team and company culture are cornerstones to the success of Akebia.  This person will need to exemplify good leadership, people development, and embody the values of the company.  Experience fostering a team environment of candor, openness, and inclusiveness.
  • The Company’s Chief Financial Officer must have substantial experience working with the Board of Directors and play a key role in interacting with the Audit Committee.
  • It is preferred that this executive has an accomplished track record with investment bankers, institutional investors, and other financially oriented stakeholders.
  • Previous experience leading finance for a commercial, geographically diverse business of scale is highly desirable.
  • While a scientific or medical background is clearly not required, we are seeking an individual who is intellectually curious in science, medicine and innovation for the discovery and development of new medical products will be a driving emphasis of the Company.
  • This person must possess excellent communication skills, strong strategic thinking, integrity, commitment, tenacity, appreciation for the importance of leadership and of people in achieving company results.   They should personally connect and be inspired by our purpose to better the life of each person impacted by kidney disease.
