Adjunct Instructor: American Sign Language, Xavier University

 

Xavier University, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, is currently accepting applications for an Adjunct Instructor of basic American Sign Language to begin in the fall of 2019. This position will include the instruction of two beginning sign language courses housed within the Classics and Modern Languages Department. All applicants for this position must provide evidence of advanced proficiency in American Sign Language.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum qualifications to teach American Sign Language at Xavier University include a Bachelor’s degree in Interpreting or related field including a minimum of 4 years of interpreting employment or a Master’s Degree in the instruction of American Sign Language or related field. National Certification is highly desired. Previous American Sign Language course instruction required. Candidates should also demonstrate experience with, and knowledge of, the Deaf culture.

 

This position will include two, three hour credit courses to begin in the fall of 2019. These particular courses will be evening courses, two days per week. These courses will count towards a second language credit as well as Xavier’s Deaf Studies Minor. Additional courses in the spring semester of 2020 and beyond will be available if applicant demonstrates success during the fall 2019 semester. Additional course offerings will be determined at the end of the fall 2019 semester. Contracts for adjunct faculty members are issued on a semester basis.

 

Duties include:

 

  • Deliver learning-centered instruction by establishing a classroom environment conducive to learning and student involvement as well as effectively planning and preparing for classes and student success.
  • Adequately prepare all course materials and lessons including an appropriate course syllabus clearly describing course expectations.
  • Provide appropriate course assessments designed to adequately assess student’s learning in connection with Xavier’s Core Curriculum.
  • Use Xavier’s campus-wide academic program, Canvas, to provide course information and an electronic record of student’s progress on a regular basis.
  • Work cooperatively with members of the American Sign Language department, faculty in the Classics and Modern Languages department, the Director of Deaf Studies and the department Chair within the College of Arts and Sciences.
